A 5:15 start, planned in ten minutes

In a Tucson summer the run is over before most clubs wake up. Jordan Blake plans Saturday on Thursday night, and the 4:45 reminder does the rest.

Dawn Patrol exists because of the heat. From June to September it is past 90 degrees in Tucson by seven in the morning, so the club starts at 5:15 and is drinking coffee by the time the sun clears the Rincons.

Jordan Blake started it with four friends and a rule: if you say you're coming, you come, because nobody wants to stand at a dark trailhead wondering whether to wait. For the first two years the rule was enforced by a spreadsheet and a lot of texting.

Thursday night

Planning used to take the whole of Thursday evening. Jordan would pick the route, post it in one chat for the regulars and another for newer members, answer questions about parking in both, and build the RSVP sheet by hand.

Now the route is already in the club's library, with the trailhead pinned and the one confusing junction marked. Posting Saturday is four fields and a button. Jordan timed it once: ten minutes, including choosing between the Rillito path and the Sabino loop.

I plan Saturday on Thursday night in ten minutes. It used to eat the whole evening and two group chats.

The 4:45 reminder

The reminder matters more at this hour than at any other. Members get the start time, the trailhead pin and their group at 4:45, on the lock screen, where a half-awake runner will actually see it. 91% of the people who say yes are at the trailhead by 5:10.

When the season turns, the start time moves: 5:15 in summer, 6:00 in the shoulder months, 6:45 in winter. Jordan changes it once on the club's settings and every future run follows.

Small on purpose

Dawn Patrol has 58 members and three leads, and Jordan is not trying to make it bigger. The club still fits the free plan most months. What the app gave back was not growth but Thursday evenings, and a founder who is not the single point of failure for a 5:15 start.

At 4:45 in the morning nobody is scrolling a group chat. One notification with the pin and the time is the whole job.
